GETTING TO THIS POINT WASN'T EASY
When we started out trying to get grant funding, we really struggled with knowing how to get started. We didn’t know half the information they were asking for on the proposals and we lacked the right documentation to attach to show proof that we could be trusted to handle “other people’s money”.
We listened to what others were telling us, saying that we were doing good work and we should automatically be able to get grant funding to help us expand and grow. Well, automatic it was not. After being rejected by funder after funder 15 times in a row, we knew the problem had to be us. 🙅♀️
We took some time to really put our internal structure in order and financials. It took MONTHS! Finally we had the opportunity to apply for a grant from United Way, and we were really nervous. We invested hundreds of dollars into getting a compilation from a CPA because it was one of the requirements for funding.
But something was different this time. For the first time since we had started trying to get grant funding, we actually had all of the documentation they asked for. We could check all the boxes and give them all the required demographics, data and details of everything we had done, and explain exactly what we needed the money for, plus what we wanted to do in the future.
After the months we spent solidifying the organization, this felt somehow easier. So we left no stone unturned, prayed over the application and turned it in.
We put a pause on seeking grant funding because after all the work we did to get the United Way grant off the ground if they said no, we needed to know WHY!!!
After submitting our fair share of grant proposals and sponsorship letters ranging from $100 to $20,000
We finally realized 2 things:
One
There is no automatic hack to overnight grant funding success. As a faith-based nonprofit, understand this: you're uniquely called to help others, but you are still a business FIRST. When you open your organization to be guided by that, bringing in grant funding time after time moves from being strange, to systematic.
Two
Copy-paste, 'one-size-fits-all' grant writing solutions don't work because they are not specific to your mission and cause and no matter of cut and paste can solve an unhealthy nonprofit infrastructure. The truth is only 20% of grant proposals are based on what you plan to do, while 80% is based on what you can show that you have already done.
And that’s when we finally realized:
The strategy we used at the beginning of our grant-winning success worked best. We we went all in on building the capacity of our church's outreach. Contrary to what others told us to do, we focused on the business side of the vision. Because if we got this right, we knew that we could do so much more.
A few months later, we received a letter in the mail, that not just one, but both of the programs we submitted for would be funded to the tune of $20,000!!!
What happened in the years to follow blew our minds. The more we focused on the business side of the vision, the more grant funding would qualify for, and the more funding we received, the more people we could serve! The more we used this process to create a strategy, the faster we got at applying for funding. Even at a moment's notice. And it's the same strategy We've now taught to over 500 organizations throughout the country.
